A general rule of thumb is one recessed light per 4–6 square feet for ambient lighting. For a 12x14 living room, 6–8 lights typically provides good general illumination. We plan the layout based on your ceiling height, room function, and dimmer requirements before we start.
Only if the existing electrical box is rated for fan weight (typically 35+ lbs). Standard light fixture boxes are not fan-rated and must be replaced with a proper fan-rated brace box. We always check and replace the box as needed.
Fan motors should not be on standard dimmers — it damages the motor and creates a fire hazard. However, integrated light kits on ceiling fans can be dimmed with a specialized fan dimmer switch or smart controller. We ensure the right control is paired with your fan.
Simple fixture replacements typically don't require permits. New circuits for outdoor lighting or significant additions may require permits in Washington. We'll let you know when we assess your project, and handle permits if needed.
